From The Progressive

Amy Goodman on Democracy Now just broke a story that is a piece of a larger puzzle: and that puzzle is the spying on dissidents right here in the United States.

This time it was done by someone working for the U.S. military, which may be illegal.

It happened out in Olympia, Washington, where a guy who went by the name of John Jacob infiltrated a group of anarchists working with Students for a Democratic Society and the Port Militarization Resistance. This went on for a couple of years.

Denver Cop Accused of Using Gun to Speed up McDonald’s Breakfast

A Denver police officer faces felony menacing and weapons charges based on an allegation that he pointed a pistol to speed up his order at an Aurora McDonald’s in May.An employee at the McDonald’s at 18181 E. Hampden Ave. told investigators that two officers were waiting for their order at the drive-through window in the early morning hours when Derrick Curtis Saunders, 29, grew impatient and pulled a weapon.

In addition to the menacing and weapons charges, Saunders also is charged with prohibited use of a weapon, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct, the Aurora Police Department said Monday.

Denver police spokesman Sonny Jackson said Saunders has been suspended with pay during the investigation, but he would be put on unpaid leave once the department is formally notified of the charges.

Jackson said neither he nor Police Chief Gerald Whitman would comment on the case.

“It would be inappropriate for us to make any comment about another department’s case, especially an ongoing, active investigation,” he said.

Saunders was assigned to Denver International Airport.  His booking photograph was not available from Aurora police Monday.

Formation of the Denver Anarchist Black Cross

In late June, anti-authoritarians from Denver and Boulder met to discuss the creation of a new Anarchist Black Cross chapter in response to a perceived need for such a group to exist in our region.
The Denver Anarchist Black Cross exists to contribute to the defense of social movements, both internally and externally, working against oppression and for self determination.

Since its inception at the beginning of the 20th Century, the mission of the Anarchist Black Cross has been to contribute to the defense of mass movements working for liberation from state and capitalist domination. The most previous incarnation of an Anarchist Black Cross chapter in Denver was snuffed out of existence quite quickly in 2004, after a full scale FBI investigation into the organization was launched to coincide with the security efforts protecting the Democratic National Convention that summer. The resulting FBI investigation spread to include the Great Plains Anarchist Network and dozens of anarchist organizers active in the Midwest.

With this history in mind, but also amidst a backdrop of increasing state attacks on social movements in the United States, we decided to form a new Denver chapter of the ABC. We felt that the time is far past due to organize methods of defense within our communities, and that under the historical banner of the Anarchist Black Cross was one strategic way to proceed with our work.

Historically, the Anarchist Black Cross has played a crucial role in mass movement defense; organizing support and defense of political prisoners and prisoners of war, maintaining physical solidarity against the police during factory and school occupations, organizing self defense and armed defense of social movements, and fulfilling a broad range of roles within the defense of social movements.

We wish to carry on this work and start to explore other avenues of movement defense that have historically not been a major focus of many ABC chapters.

The state and those that wish to destroy movements for liberation attack us on many levels. Support for political prisoners and prisoners of war, organizing against white supremacist and neo-fascist attacks, performing roles of security and physical defense, and organizing self-defense and legal defense on a variety of levels will continue to be a main backbone of our work.

From the Green Scare to the arrest of former Panthers, from the cases of the RNC 8 to mass incarceration and deportations of migrants, the state has been busy attacking our communities and movements over the last several years.

However, we wish to also focus on the internal mechanisms that affect movements and lead to their demise. These internal threats are used to split and destroy movements far before they even become a threat. We envision an ABC chapter capable of contributing to the strengthening of our movement by providing mental, emotional, material, and physical support to its members and their communities. Ultimately, we want to help ensure the strength of our movements from the inside out.

We’re still figuring out what all this looks like. We’re still working to understand how to provide the best support possible within our social movements and to maintain our movement as a legitimate and strong threat to state, capitalist, white supremacist, patriarchal power and other forms of domination. We also intend on petitioning the Anarchist Black Cross Federation for membership soon, as we feel that affiliation with the Federation will aid our work, especially around supporting political prisoners and prisoners of war held in the United States.

Benefit Matinee Film for Leonard Peltier

Sunday July 26th, 3pm
Colorado Anti-Violence Program Office
304 Elati Street, Denver
A screening of: “Incident at Oglala”
A Matinee Film Benefit for American Indian Movement Political Prisoner,
Leonard Peltier

American Indian Movement leader and organizer, Leonard Peltier, has spent
over 30 years in prison as a result of legal proceedings marred with
doctored evidence, perjured witness testimonies, and falsified evidence.

Leonard’s incarceration is but one story in a chapter of state repression
against indigenous self organizing in the 1970’s. His arrest and
imprisonment came as a direct result of the effectiveness of the American
Indian Movement and others to fight for self determination for indigenous
peoples in the Americas and against continued injustices at the hands of
colonizer governments.

Leonard has been granted a parole hearing date of Tuesday July 28th. His
legal team and the Leonard Peltier Defense-Offense Committee have called for stepped up community based efforts on his behalf in the lead up to
this hearing.

More info about Leonard’s case can be found at:
http://www.whoisleonardpeltier.info/

The Denver Anarchist Black Cross is a new collective in the Denver area
working toward contributing to the defense, both internally and
externally, of social movements working against oppression and for self
determination for all peoples.

All funds generated from this event will go to benefit ongoing legal and
movement building work on Leonard’s behalf.
