Prior to her imprisonment, Fran was a dedicated environmental defense and animal rights activist in Nebraska. She also owned a farm. When a local man wanted to marry Fran and take her farm, she rejected him. He began threatening Fran and attacked her in her home. Fran shot him in self-defense and, after the man died, was charged with murder. Fran’s case was highly politicized. She was not allowed to enter a plea of self defense and received a life sentence.
