Tacoma: Anarchist begins serving jail sentence for “Mayday riots”

On Saturday Aug. 16th, Bryan Riggins, a Tacoma-based anarchist, started serving the 73 day (lessened from the initial 120) sentence he received stemming from the events of May Day 2008.

On July 21, 2009, the events of May Day 2008 finally came to a close with the sentencing of four anarchists of the South Sound region. For over a year they have been legally bound to endure an array of court dates, legal costs, extradition waivers, etc. All this has stemmed from some debatable interactions with banks that have since then had a wide impact on the Olympia activist and broader communities.

GI Resister going to prison for refusal to participate in occupation of Afghanistan

GI Resister Travis Bishop Sergeant Travis Bishop, with the US Army’s 57th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, pled not guilty at a special court martial on Thursday to two counts of missing movement, disobeying a lawful order and going absent without leave (AWOL). Friday, in a trial full of theatrics from the jury, prosecution witnesses and the prosecution, he was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to 12 months in a military jail.

Sgt. Bishop is the second soldier from Fort Hood in as many weeks to be tried by the military for his stand against an occupation he believes is “illegal.” He insists that it would be unethical for him to deploy to support an occupation he opposes on both moral and legal grounds, and has filed for conscientious objector (CO) status. A CO is someone who refuses to participate in combat based on religious or ethical grounds, and can be given an honorable discharge by the military.

Last week, Specialist Victor Agosto was sentenced to 30 days in a county jail for his refusal to deploy to Afghanistan. Agosto, like Bishop, feels the war is illegal, something that James Branum, the civilian lawyer for both soldiers, agrees with.

URGENT: Puerto Rican Political Prisoners Being Denied Parole and Medical Treatment

Two Puerto Rican political prisoners are facing some serious repression in prison right now.  One, Carlos Alberto Torres, has a good chance of getting parole after serving 29 years in prison, but suddenly has had false charges placed against him (they were dropped after an investigation but are now being reversed!) that could easily derail his chances of getting out.  The other, Avelino Gonzalez Claudio has developed a neurological condition and is being denied medical treatment.

The National Boricua Human Rights Network and the Comite Por Derechos Humanos de Puerto Rico are waging a phone and fax campaign.

NAACP Calls for Civil Rights Investigation in Mumia Case

This year was the NAACP’s 100th anniversary, and while Obama’s address garnered most of the media attention another significant event took place- the NAACP passed a resolution asking Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate the case of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Mumia’s trial was riddled with corruption and malpractice- from a bigoted judge, to police misconduct in gathering evidence to the suppression of witnesses.  Linn Washington Jr. has written a succinct but encompassing look at the many examples which made Mumia’s trial unfair.

Hopefully with the resolution from the NAACP and pressure from us at the grassroots we can give Mumia a new trial and with the eyes of the world upon it, go a bit more fairly than the first time.

IRA member and British prison escapee will be deported from U.S.

from irishecho.com:

Saturday, August 15, 2009– Former Maze prisoner and long-time California resident Pól Brennan has been informed that he is to be deported from the United States at the end of next week.

The Department of Homeland Security’s decision was verbally relayed to Brennan on Thursday at Port Isabel Detention Center in Texas, where he has been held since his arrest in January 2008.

His lawyer Beth Feinberg said that only a “public outcry” over the unjustness of the deportation order could prevent it.

“At this point, the strongest action that can be taken is to contact Secretary Napolitano’s office at the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton as well as legislators to try to get the message across that Pól should not be deported and should be allowed to remain in the U.S.,” Feinberg said, “particularly in light of the fact of the intent and spirit of the Good Friday Agreement was not to punish folks for political activity that occurred so long ago in Northern Ireland, and 30 years ago in Pól’s case.”

A judge ordered Brennan’s arrest in November, and his appeals were exhausted in April. Since then, the case has been in the political realm, according to his legal team.

“We have been asking both for a deferred action and a waiver of removal that would allow him to remain in the country as a lawful permanent resident based on his 20-year marriage to a U.S. citizen,” said Feinberg, a lawyer with the San Francisco firm Van Der Hout, Brigagliano & Nightingale

Brennan, 56, was one of 38 IRA prisoners who escaped from the Maze Prison (also known as Long Kesh) in 1983. After leaving Ireland, he lived under an assumed name in the San Francisco area for a number of years. He was arrested in 1993, and detained while the British government sought his extradition.

After the 1998 signing of the Good Friday agreement, which Brennan supports, the British government ended its efforts to extradite him and he lived openly under his own name from that point on.

On Jan. 27 last year, while driving with his wife Joanna Volz to visit friends in Texas, Brennan was detained at an immigration checkpoint because his U.S.-issued work permit had expired. While he had applied to renew the document, authorities had not sent it to him.

Phoenix: 44 kidnapped during ICE Raid

Although many organizations do not consider migrant workers abducted in raids by state agencies to be typical “political prisoners,” the political, social, and economic reasons that the state has attacked and arrested migrant laborers and those with questionable legal residency status cannot be ignored.

The context for the raids that have been occuring since 2006 also must never be ignored. A new wave of repression against migrants started in the direct aftermath of giant popular mobilizations of migrants and supporters in the Spring of 2006. These mobilizations made the radical demand to stop the criminalization of those without documentation residing in the United States. We stand in solidarity with all people struggling for collective self determination, and those that have become victims of the state for their documentation status.  We envision and work for a borderless society, in which freedom exists for all people, and not just for property.

Dead Prez’s M1 to star in new film about Political Prisoner and BLA Member Sundiata Acoli

from TheBoomBox.com:

With their critically-acclaimed independent album ‘Pulse of the People’ currently garnering buzz, the Florida/New York tandem of Dead Prez are now setting their sights on bringing their thought-provoking, politically-minded talents to the big screen.

Stic. man and M-1 will be prominently featured on the soundtrack to ‘Training Day’ director Antoine Fuqua’s upcoming film ‘ Brooklyn’s Finest.’ “We have two joints in the movie,” stic told The BoomBox of the corrupt cop street drama, which is set to hit theaters this fall. “Don Cheadle, Richard Gere and Wesley Snipes are all in it.”

Meanwhile Dead Prez’s M-1 will be showcasing his acting chops in the independent film ‘A Power Sun,’ which tells the story of Sundiata Acoli, a former member of the Black Liberation Army who is currently incarcerated for his part in a controversial 1973 gun battle with New Jersey State Police.

“Through everything we have done in hip hop music, I’ve been allowed to play the role of Sundiata Acoli because of the upstanding way that dead prez has been able to represent the movement,” M-1 said of the project, which is being produced by film company Field Up Productions and set for a 2010 release. “I just want to give a shout out to all the OG’s who have embraced the music of Dead Prez. I’m honored that we have a place in rap to talk about what’s real in the world. Look out for the flick.”

Dead Prez, who made their album debut with the socially conscious 2000 classic ‘Let’s Get Free,’ is currently on tour in support of ‘Pulse of the People’ — which features production from DJ Green Lantern and appearances by Bun B, Styles P, and the legendary Chuck D of Public Enemy.
